There's no single "best base" in Palworld — the right pick depends on what resource you need and how far into the game you are. This guide covers verified coordinates for every stage of the game, plus dedicated resource outposts for mining, sulfur, quartz, oil, and Soralite. All picks aggregated from Sportskeeda, PC Gamer, Game8, allthings.how, NextTier, and Palatlas — sources cited at the bottom.

How to pick a base spot — the four levers

Before diving into specific coordinates, understand what makes a location good:

  • Flat terrain — you can build stations without wrestling the placement grid. But a location with a natural choke point (ridge, water, elevation) beats a flat open plateau every time.
  • Resource nodes within radius — ore, coal, sulfur, oil, or plants. The more nodes packed into your base circle, the less you fast-travel to gather.
  • Raid safety — plateaus, cliff edges, and secluded ruins make raids physically hard to reach. Open flatland invites full-force attacks.
  • Water + exit access — for Watering Pals + your own quick escape. Water-adjacent spots let you place aquatic building sets (1.0 addition).

You can rarely get all four in one spot. Pick two or three and build around them.

Early game — level 1-15

Windswept Hills basin — (230, -486)

The default community pick for a first base. Wood, stone, small ore cluster, berries, and Paldium within the base radius. Flat enough to build easily, close to the starting area for fast travel. This is where 80% of new players should go.

Near the Penking boss — (108, -329)

Beach spot with easy access to a repeatable Penking boss variant (one of the best early-game base Pals for Handiwork + Watering). Multiple low-level Pal spawns nearby for capturing. Good if you're actively hunting your early Penking.

Sunlit Isle — east of the starting area

Small island with 6 crude oil nodes and low-level (under 10) Pal spawns. Not viable as a primary base but a great secondary early oil farm once you unlock the drill.

Mid-game — level 15-35

Southwest of Small Settlement — community "best overall"

This is the most-recommended spot across every guide I aggregated. Large flat terrain, multiple ore nodes, balanced enemy levels for early raids. Close to NPCs for trading. Best for a "main permanent base" that scales from mid to endgame.

Best mining base — Mountain peak (192, 38)

5-6 ore nodes + 5-6 coal nodes in a single base radius. Non-raidable due to the elevation — raiders can't path to the mountain top. If your priority is mining efficiency and pure safety, this is the S-tier mid-game spot. Doubles as the best coal outpost — no separate coal base needed.

Best ore-only outpost — (270, -230)

8 ore nodes — the densest single-resource cluster on the main island. Put a Digtoise or Bastigor here and let it print stone/ore while you play elsewhere. Not defensively strong; treat as a satellite base, not a main base.

Sandstone Gate sinkhole — (-1281, -633)

Plain desert plateau with a hole straight down into an underground chamber. Ideal low-profile mining outpost — Pals mine underground while raiders literally can't find the base. Requires a bit more setup but exceptional stealth.

The Oasis — (-259, -1398)

Underground desert base with water at the bottom, greenery for Planting Pals, and two mineshaft exits. Rare combination of resources + water + defensive geography. Better than most surface bases in the desert biome.

Best sulfur base — Mount Obsidian (volcanic biome)

Sulfur becomes critical late-game for ammunition production. The volcanic biome has three major clusters, each with different tradeoffs:

Foot of the Volcano — (-385, -507)

Easiest access and the best "first sulfur outpost." 8 sulfur nodes plus a few ore deposits in the surrounding area. Good balance of accessibility and yield — pick this if you're just unlocking heat-resistant gear and want to start automating sulfur ASAP.

Eternal Pyre Tower area — (-595, -520)

8 sulfur nodes along the edge of a lava pool drop-off, directly adjacent to the Tower of the Brothers of the Eternal Pyre. Lower Pal spawn rate than the other volcanic spots, which makes it noticeably safer for actually mining without constant interruptions.

West of Mount Obsidian — (-744, -442)

Densest single cluster in the game: 7 sulfur nodes tight together plus 4 more nearby (11 total). Genuinely late-game only — the surrounding lava pools leave very little flat ground to actually build a base on. Reserve this for when you're producing ammo at scale and can accept the cramped layout.

Requirements for all three:

  • Heat-resistant gear (mandatory — the volcanic biome drains HP without it)
  • Level 52 unlocks the Sulfur Mine building for fully automated production
  • Mining-focused Pals — Digtoise, Bastigor, or (1.0) Aegidron for max output

Best quartz base — Astral Mountains (frozen biome)

Pure Quartz is required for Circuit Boards, which chain into many endgame crafting recipes. The Astral Mountains have several dense clusters:

Unthawable Lake — (-211, 252)

The community consensus best. 9 Pure Quartz deposits plus 1 regular ore node in a single base radius. West of the Unthawable Lake fast-travel point. If you're building only one quartz base, build here.

Garden Beneath the Cliffs area — (-209, 250)

Similar cluster to Unthawable Lake, just south of the Southern Astral Mountains snowy biome. Second choice if the first is too exposed to weather effects for your setup.

Other dense clusters worth knowing

  • PAL Genetic Research Unit Tower entrance — ~8 nodes, close to a tower for fast travel
  • Land of Absolute Zero — 8 nodes
  • Pristine Snow Field — 6 nodes, the safest of the group for anyone new to the Astral biome

Requirements:

  • Cold Resistant Armor Level 2 minimum (Level 3 recommended at night — cold in the Astral Mountains can chunk your HP fast)
  • Aegidron (Mining 8, 1.0 addition) is the top miner for quartz
  • Knocklem (Mining 7 + Transporting 7) is the ideal dual-role — mines AND hauls, so you don't need a separate transporter

Endgame — level 35+

Best oil base — Sakurajima Waterfall (-646, 270)

The community consensus best endgame oil farm. Two stackable oil nodes, dungeon access nearby, and a Pal Expedition Station positioned in the cliff face that blocks the only raid approach — effectively non-raidable. If you need crude oil for late-game weapon crafting, this is where you build.

Best Soralite base — Sunreach floating islands (-305, 1410)

Up to 6 Soralite nodes for Pals to mine — Soralite is essential for the Ancient Workbench (which you'll need for Awakening Crystals per the Awakening guide). If you're gearing up for World Tree endgame, this is where the material chain starts.

Oasis Isle — (917, 193)

3 oil nodes plus Kinship Peach spawns. Water-adjacent for aquatic building. Good middle-ground between oil farming and general endgame base.

Volcanic west beach — (-788, -659)

Small beach on the volcanic continent, perfectly laid out for defense — narrow approach, natural terrain funneling raids into one chokepoint. Best for players who want a defensive endgame base rather than a resource-maxed one.

Palworld 1.0 addition — Foot of the World Tree (841, 639)

New with 1.0. Jungle views, lakeside plots (requires the aquatic building kit), and proximity to the World Tree entrance for endgame gem farming without long fast-travel loops. If you're doing serious World Tree Resource Farming runs, having a base near the entrance saves real time.

Not the best absolute base — resource nodes aren't dense — but the strategic location for late-1.0 endgame is worth the tradeoff.

Raid safety — principles that beat any single location

Once you've picked a spot, raid design still matters:

  • Palbox = raid target #1. Ring it with a minimum of 2 layers of stone walls between it and any exterior. If the Palbox falls, everything is lost.
  • Build one gate, not zero and not many. A walled-off base with no gate breaks Pal pathing — your workers get stuck behind their own walls. But multiple gates = multiple attack vectors.
  • Design a 4-tile-wide "kill corridor" between the gate and the Palbox. Raiders funnel through, your defenders (or mounted weapons) focus fire.
  • Use natural chokepoints. A ridge, water edge, or cliff wall does the work of 20 stone walls for free.
  • Unlock Metal Structure Set at Tier 30 as soon as possible. Stone survives some raids; metal survives most.

For deeper detail, see the Defense Base Layout guide.

Common base-location mistakes

  • Building on wide open flatland because it's easy — you get raided from every side simultaneously
  • Ignoring raid difficulty for the coordinate — a mid-game base on Sakurajima gets stomped
  • Placing the Palbox against an outer wall — one broken wall = game over
  • Choosing "beautiful" over "productive" for your main base — a scenic ridge without ore nodes is a poor main; make it a secondary
  • No water access for Watering-focused Pals — halves your farm output
  • Trying to make one base do everything — Palworld gives you 3 base slots. Use them for specialization.

Which to pick — quick recommendations by priority

  • Your absolute first base → Windswept Hills (230, -486)
  • Long-term main base → Southwest of Small Settlement
  • Best mining base → (192, 38) mountain peak (ore + coal, raid-proof)
  • Ore-only satellite → (270, -230) 8-ore cluster
  • Best sulfur base → Foot of Volcano (-385, -507) for entry, West of Mount Obsidian (-744, -442) for max yield
  • Best quartz base → Unthawable Lake (-211, 252)
  • Endgame oil → Sakurajima Waterfall (-646, 270)
  • World Tree gearing → Sunreach Soralite (-305, 1410) or Foot of World Tree (841, 639)
  • Defensively perfect → Volcanic west beach (-788, -659) or a plateau top

Most players end up running 2-3 bases simultaneously — a main production base + one or two specialized resource satellites. Palworld gives you 3 base slots by default, so use them.
